	Course Syllabus
	This course will explore the domestic sources of instability in modern Asia from waning years of the Imperial Age to the present. The focus will be largely on the countries South Asia (India and its neighbors) and East Asia (China and its neighbors).

Govt. 643: Sovereignty, Nationalism and State Formation in Asia

	Course Syllabus
	This course will consider how the historical development of sovereignty and nationalism shaped state formation in modern Asia. We will also evaluate sovereignty and nationalism as analytic categories - as causes and consequences - in the Asian context. Cases material will emphasize South Asia, Greater China, and South East Asia. The written requirement is a choice of multiple short essays or a longer synthesis-cum-research paper.
